Work gets underway on a 25-metre Mural at Melbourne Assessment Prison (MAP)

This year, Melbourne Assessment Prison (MAP) approached The Torch to facilitate a mural project to be painted on the west wall of the new Protection Unit exercise yard. The wall measures 25 metres in length, and 4.2 metres in height.

The Torch brought professional mural mentor Tom Civil on board for the project, and he was joined by four highly talented post-release artists: Gunditjmara Keerraaywoorrong man Chris Austin, Yorta Yorta man Kelvin Rogers, Wiradjuri man Graham Gilbert who is also Assistant Coordinator, and Gunditjmara man Ricky Abrahams who wasn’t able to attend the painting but was invaluable in the groundwork. Gunaikurnai man Aaron Duggan has also joined the project this week to assist with this mammoth effort.

After many days of planning in The Torch office, work got underway last week on washing and preparing the wall, and over the week the team have been working together to bring their designs to life.

We can’t wait to share the final work.
