Kerry Newby is a Yorta Yorta artist living on Gumbaynggirr country who started painting in 2019 when she joined The Torch Program. Kerry paints landscapes to represent her connection to Yorta Yorta country, reflections of her thoughts and of her childhood memories.
It is an outlet for my thoughts and feelings. It helps me process my everyday life. It’s the only way I know how to express myself, whenever I need to get something off my chest I do it through painting.
We asked Kerry how it felt sharing her story through her artworks and she told us,
It has made me more confident and helped re-build my self esteem. When I paint it takes me to a place of happiness and I paint what my mind sees.
Being an artist with The Torch has changed me because I feel like someone again, just like I was before I went to jail. My father has always been an artist and it has strengthened our relationship. If I had not been involved in the program I would not be an artist.
