The Torch is thrilled to see the new Latrobe Regional Hospital commission from proud Gunaikurnai man and Torch artist Alfred Carter which is proudly on display as part of their ‘world-class’ $223.5 million Stage 3A expansion. Alfie sought out this opportunity himself and brought it to fruition with support from his Indigenous Arts Officer Sean Miller. His monumental artwork promises to create a powerful connection between the new building and Country, weaving cultural significance into the very fabric of the hospital. Alfred’s work depicts the five clans of the Gunaikurnai nation and how important Country is to the healing process.
Alfred was joined by Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas and Minister for Housing, Water and Equality (and local MP) Harriet Shing to officially open the new building.
This is a great example of an artist seeking out opportunities for themselves and enthusiastically learning new skills and professional development through the process. We at The Torch are very proud of Alfie and his achievements with this monumental commission.
We encourage you to explore Alfred’s other works here.
