Markeeta Wemba Wemba people

Markeeta is a proud Wemba Wemba artist who grew up in Collingwood, Prahran, Carlton and Fitzroy in Naarm (Melbourne). From a young age, she was surrounded by creativity, watching Aunty Lorraine and other Elders paint, their stories flowing onto canvas with every brushstroke. She absorbed their wisdom, learning not just about art but about culture, connection, and the power of storytelling.

For Markeeta, painting is more than an artistic practice—it’s an extension of her identity. It’s a way to express her deepest emotions, offering a sense of release and calm that nothing else can. Through her work, she shares her personal stories, yet she encourages viewers to find meaning and feel their emotions, knowing that every piece is created from her heart, soul, and spirit.

Being an artist has given Markeeta a strong sense of identity and pride, not only for herself but for her children. Painting is her way of staying connected to culture and mob, keeping traditions alive through contemporary expression. Every artwork she creates is a bridge between past and present, between personal challenges and victories.

Through her art, Markeeta continues the legacy of those who came before her, ensuring that Wemba Wemba stories, emotions, and spirit endure for future generations.
