Shaniqua K. is a proud Barkindji and Kamilaroi artist from Mildura, Victoria. A young and emerging creative force, she began painting in 2023 while in prison, finding solace and strength in the act of creation. Art became her voice—a way to share the stories of her family and their journeys without having to speak them aloud.

Growing up, Shaniqua was surrounded by creativity, watching her mother paint and express culture through art. This early exposure planted the seeds of her own artistic journey, which fully blossomed when she picked up the brush herself. Since then, painting has deepened her connection to culture, igniting a passion for learning and sharing her heritage.

Through her work, Shaniqua explores themes of family, resilience, and belonging, using traditional and contemporary techniques to weave visual narratives that honor her ancestors and lived experiences. As she continues to grow as an artist, her dream is to pursue art full-time, creating work that speaks to the strength, beauty, and enduring spirit of her people.
