That Guy Dja Dja Wurrung people
Born in Footscray in 1989, That Guy is a Dja Dja Wurrung man who grew up in the Bacchus Marsh, Echuca and Maryborough areas.
Struggling with the ‘classroom setting’ as well as with reading and writing, That Guy was 'kicked out of high school' he states, but learned both Roof Tiling and Automotive trades, gaining a Certificate III, as well as working as an electrician and plasterer.
Today, That Guy is completing a Certificate in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts, helping him connect to the ‘cultural side of things’; a ‘big puzzle piece that was missing out of my life’, he shares.
‘Learning about it has given me purpose. I try to pass messages and knowledge through my paintings. Some of my paintings are strongly connected to certain subjects and people in my life’.
For the future, ‘I hope to be famous’ says That Guy. ‘To have my artwork everywhere. It would be an achievement for me and my family and to inspire people and, maybe one day, help someone change their life with my artwork. To leave a mark when I’m gone’.
