Cookie Dja Dja Wurrung people

Cookie is a proud Dja Dja Wurrung man who began making art in The Torch Program. ‘They have been a great help for me’, he says, ‘especially going through a tough time while I was in jail’. Now back in community, Cookie states that without the support of The Torch and of his Arts Support Worker, ‘I would not be where I am now’.
Cookie’s vibrant and detailed artwork spans both painted canvases that combine dot-work, figurative animals and landscapes, sometimes together on the same canvas; as well as producing carved and painted woodwork such as clapsticks and ‘boondi’.
His predominant motifs are centred on native animals, such as Waa the Crow/Raven, his totem, as well as other birds, snakes, and the turtle; often representing people, such as himself, his family and his Elders, past and present.
