Bonkers Gunditjmara/Gunaikurnai people

William is a proud Gunditjmara/Gunaikurnai man, with his grandmother from Gunditjmara Country and his grandfather from Gunaikurnai Country. He grew up in Gippsland, where his parents lived and worked, and where he first developed his deep connection to culture, community, and Country.

Since the early 2000s, William has been painting stories inspired by the Gippsland region. His work is rich with meaning, drawing on cultural traditions and the landscapes that shaped him. Each painting is created with the intention of sharing knowledge, honouring ancestors, and keeping stories alive for the next generation.

Over the years, William has expanded his creative practice, exploring new mediums while staying grounded in culture. Most recently, he has been creating Spirit Eggs — intricately carved emu eggs fitted with LED lights. These unique pieces bring together ancient storytelling and contemporary design, casting a soft glow that reveals the detailed carvings and spiritual themes within each egg.

William’s art continues to evolve, but at its core it always celebrates resilience, identity, and tradition. Whether through canvas or Spirit Eggs, his work invites people to connect with the stories of Gippsland and the strength of Aboriginal culture.
