Craig was born in Footscray in 1976, and is of Kamilaroi/Gamilaroi descent from his father’s side. ‘He [was] born in Guyra, New South Wales. In the 40s [he] moved to Wiradjuri Country till he met my mother in Victoria, and moved to the western suburbs of Melbourne.’

After completing year ten at High School, Craig worked as a postal worker for eight years, as well as doing cleaning, and car detailing. Craig also worked for many years in security as a crowd controller for ‘footy games’ amongst other events.

Craig states that he started painting when he became incarcerated. ‘[Never] did I take much interest, as life was so busy, but being in jail I have the time to reflect on culture, and, having the time I taught myself how to paint and be creative. But have watched other artists as well.’

For Craig, painting gives him a ‘calming sense’. He enjoys the process of starting from a blank canvas to a finished piece. ‘It also draws me to stepping out of my comfort zone, trying new things’, he shares. Copper, gold, and silver are his preferred colours, but he enjoys pastels and rainbow colours too. He strives to have a style that is distinctly his own. ‘I try not to take on other peoples stuff.’

‘I am inspired to capture my culture in my paintings,’ Craig says. And in the future, he would like to do portraits of people. ‘Capturing their feelings at the time’.
