Jaye Gunaikurnai people
My name is Jaye Richardson, and I am a GunaiKurnai man from Gippsland Lakes Entrance. I discovered my passion for painting later in life, during a difficult period when I found myself incarcerated. While in prison, I began to learn more about my culture and my people. From my very first painting to now, I’ve found that I can use art to tell stories about my mob and my personal journey.
I have also found painting gives me my peace and quiet to where I relax and forget about anything that has been going on I just let it go and get lost in the painting.
I believe that art and culture offer many ways to express ourselves. Seeing the diverse approaches of other artists inspires me to explore new techniques and push the boundaries of my own creativity.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
