Truganini

$700

There is a condition of the mind when one has been exposed to too much horror which is common in times of war. It used to be called shell shock but is now known as battle fatigue and is recognisable at a glance. That is what I saw in an old 1866 sepia photograph of Truganini. My heart went out to that beautiful, courageous woman, the bravest of the brave, who saw the genocidal madness of the European invasion of her country. Renowned in her youth for her humour and beauty and, in later years, for being a champion for her people, hers is the saddest story I have ever known.
