The Birth of the Sun

Long ago, when the earth was young, people had to search for their food by the dim light of the moon, because there was no sun. One time, when the emu and the brolga were arguing over who had the best looking chicks, the brolga – in a fit of temper, ran and took one of the emu’s eggs and threw it into the sky. The egg broke on a pile of sticks gathered by the sky people. It’s yolk burst into flame, causing such a huge fire that its light revealed for the first time the beauty of the earth, so beautiful that the sky people light a fire every morning when the morning star appears so that everyone can have the light of the sun.
