The Road Comes to an End
The road—which symbolises capitalist society and the rubbish it creates—comes to an end. The poles are painted with black and white feathers of cockatoos (our totems) to show people they are entering Gunditjmara Country. The diamonds and triangles in the land have featured in our artwork for thousands of years.
The Koorie man is one of the guardians of this land, responsible for taking care of it for future generations. The reflection looking back at him is of a lighter person. This is my interpretation of the assimilation policy, in which the government of the time wanted to turn us into white people. The mirror is broken to show that this idea was wrong and that assimilation didn’t work. I’ve come out of that policy a strong and proud man with knowledge from my Country. Finally, there are three jigsaw puzzle pieces missing as a prompt for you, the viewer, to stop and think about three things that need to be done to to achieve reconciliation.
