Barkindji Country in the Dreaming

This painting represents the strong connection I have with our sacred land as a Barkindji man. The meeting ground in the middle of the painting symbolises a gathering at Lake Mungo of three separate tribes, the Barkindji, Ngiyampaa and Mutti Mutti mobs. They’re speaking knowledge to the younger generation, teaching them the old traditional ways. The Eaglehawk, our spiritual ancestor and protector, sits in the background. The Kangaroo is the sacred totem of the Mutti Mutti tribe and the Emu protects and guides the Ngiyampaa mob. The scar trees in the background show the origins of our shields, coolamons and other tools, reminding us of our old people’s connection to Mother Earth. The Rainbow Serpents (Ngatjis) are very significant as the Creators of the Darling River (the Barka) where hunting and gathering is a way of life for the Barkindji people.
